Launching Hard Pressed a new cider brand for Bordertown Cidery

Bordertown Vineyards and Estate Winery is an award winning winery in Osoyoos, BC. This season, Bordertown introduced Hard Pressed, a tall can limited-edition artisanal apple cider.

Bordertown set out to make a brand new cider brand that truly captures the flavour and aroma of the juicy apples they grow – a delicious cider made using only natural ingredients and artisan methods. Surprising flavour, from a secret blend of their very best apples- a true taste of Osoyoos!

What’s the story behind Hard Pressed Cider?  Bordertown Cidery presses, ferments and bottles their cider using only the juiciest, fresh-pressed, apples, home grown in their delicious orchards in sun-drenched Osoyoos.

The Situation

We were challenged by Bordertown to come up with a new logo to better reflect the new cidery and a creative strategy for their new gluten free, all natural cider made from a custom blend of fresh pressed, apples. They wanted the design to bring the natural flavours of Okanagan apples to the forefront.

Of course, a new logo and cider packaging to help build their brand image and reputation, and increase sales.   

It was a fantastic opportunity for us to build something new from the ground up that reflects the Bordertown way of doing business.

Hard Pressed Cider™ is pressed, fermented and packaged using only the juiciest, fresh-pressed apples.  Home grown in Bordertown’s orchards in sun-drenched Osoyoos, in BC’s Okanagan Valley.

Hard Pressed Cider™ uses heritage apple varieties, each contributing in its own special way to a cider that’s refreshingly dry, with fleshy apple fruit.  Handcrafted and made with real ingredients, not the mass market cider found in stores today.  It’s downright delicious!  Crisp, refreshing and light! We are breaking the mold of overly sweet cider.

Our brief was straightforward – capture the true essence of Hard Pressed to create an identity that would stand out in an increasingly over-crowded market.

We had the pleasure of creating a unique visual identity that truly reflected this. We created the brand strategy, brand identity and the overall look, feel, and voice for Bordertown’s brand expression across various assets, including a new logo, label design and packaging.

We also created the tagline for Hard Pressed: You truly would be hard pressed to find a better fresh tasting cider!

Our visual storytelling approach engages consumers through a visual of a pioneer in the unique setting of an orchard using an old fashioned cider press to hand press the cider.

The graphics feature charismatic illustrations and bold colours to showcase man and nature. And the identity adapts seamlessly across promotional items, stationery, label design, marketing collateral, packaging, tap handles and cider glasses.

Our market research and trend analysis revealed an underground surge in artisan producers interested in the centuries-old tradition and techniques of craft cider production. There are sales increases of up to 20% each year in Canada.   Hard cider popularity has the market potential of the craft beer movement.

Hard Pressed brings people together, sparks conversation, bolsters friendships, and creates memories.  Hard Pressed has become the surprise drink of the summer, tall glasses and plenty of ice.

Hard Pressed is sold at pubs, restaurants, specialty beer stores and wine stores throughout British Columbia.

The Outcome

Bold new packaging using gold as the dominant colour, a new responsive website and all the pieces of building a brand for the sales.

We are receiving fantastic compliments on our branding. In fact, it’s one of the reasons people even try Hard Pressed in the first place – because the artwork captures their curiosity and they can’t resist trying the cider!

Retailers love our four-packs, as it makes Hard Pressed easy to display and sell. The four-packs are stackable, and the gold, black and red colours are very vivid and eye-catching.
